Itchy, oozy, reddened, motley, scabby, greasy, lumpy......these are all words that bring music to Lee Williams's ears in relation to the SKIN of companion animals.
Lee is a senior member of our small animal veterinary clinical team who uses her problem-solving approach to skin conditions. Often the owner (and also the animal ) is in despair at the outset ,sometimes after years of ineffective treatment. The challenges of prolonged unsolved skin cases are relished by Lee along with the more routine and simple ones. All benefit from years of acquired dermatology expertise, used for thorough history-taking as well as investigative diagnostic proceedures (plucks, scrapes, tapes, brushings and swabs).
A lot of skin work involves allergies and we try to find ways of getting these under control. Sometimes allergens can be specifically identified with rule-outs,trials and specific tests so they can then be avoided.Allergens might include food, insects, plants, pollens, mould.
Our Idexx in-house laboratory allows prompt blood and urine tests which along with our ultrasound service can help us rule out or diagnose skin disease that is secondary to endocrine, metabolic or neoplastic (cancerous) disease.
