Locum Equine Veterinary Nurse
6 Month Opportunity

Spend your summer in New Zealand’s South Island!

Are you an experienced Equine Veterinary Nurse looking for your next adventure? This is your chance to combine professional growth with the trip of a lifetime.

We’re looking for a motivated and skilled nurse (applicants from the UK, Australia or abroad are welcomed!) who is excited to experience life in stunning North Canterbury – just 20 minutes from Christchurch City and close to mountains, beaches, and wine country.

This fixed-term, 6-month position offers you the opportunity to play a key role in a busy equine practice during our vibrant summer season while developing your own areas of interest and expertise.

What we’re looking for:

You’ll bring a solid background in veterinary technology, equine nursing, or veterinary technician training, along with a genuine passion for horses and their care.

In this role, you’ll be:

  • Assisting with equine surgeries and maintaining theatre protocols.

  • Assisting ambulatory vets on farm with field surgeries, lameness exams and diagnostics.

  • Delivering high-quality nursing care to surgical and hospitalised patients.

  • Supporting and mentoring colleagues in a collaborative team environment.

  • Helping manage daily hospital operations.

  • Participating in our after-hours and weekend roster.

  • Maintaining high standards of hygiene across equipment, instruments, and facilities.

  • Overseeing stock control, invoicing, and accurate record-keeping.

  • Communicating effectively with clients, referring vets, and the wider community.

  • Coordinating bookings, admissions, triage, and discharges.

What we offer

You’ll join a dynamic and supportive team of nine equine veterinarians, two dedicated equine nurses, and three support staff. We value teamwork, initiative, and the fresh ideas you’ll bring.

  • Competitive pay (minimum hourly rate is the NZ Living Wage).

  • Relocation including Immigration Visa assistance and accommodation options.

  • Opportunities to grow special interests within equine practice.

  • A friendly, supportive environment where your contributions are valued.

  • Flexible days and hours so you can explore the South Island – from mountains to coastlines.

Our BESTPRACTICE accredited clinic is fully equipped with everything you need to deliver outstanding care, including a surgical suite, 6-bay hospital stable block, CT scanner, digital radiography, ultrasound, video and dynamic endoscopy, shock wave, orthobiologics, and an in-house lab.
