Canine Cough

Many cases of Canine Cough (formerly known as Kennel Cough) are continuing to be diagnosed in Christchurch and North Canterbury. Canine Cough is similar to Whooping Cough in that it causes a hacking cough that can last for weeks. It is caught by a dog breathing in aerosol droplets from an infected dog. This can occur by nose-to-nose contact, being near a coughing dog or places a where coughing dog has been.

If your dog is coughing, or you suspect Canine Cough, please make this known to reception when you book your appointment. You will be instructed to keep your dog in your vehicle outside the clinic as it is contagious. Our vets are very happy to see them in the carpark and medication can help in the first few days.

Prevention is by vaccination

Please note that vaccines do not cause disease.
Canine Cough is caused by a combination of organisms, both viral and bacterial. It is still possible for your dog to catch Canine Cough if they have been vaccinated but the risks are much lower and the cough will be much reduced in severity.

  • We suggest avoiding dog parks and keeping your dogs on-leash and away from dogs of unknown health status.

  • If you plan to use a boarding kennel, a Canine Cough booster should be considered at least 10 days prior, if they have not received one in the last 6 months.

  • If you suspect your dog may have contracted Canine Cough, please keep him or her isolated from all other dogs until no longer coughing.
