Equine Veterinary Nurse
Hospital and Surgical Focus

About Us

At Rangiora Vet Centre, our vision is simple – to be The Centre of Veterinary Excellence and Innovation. We’re on the lookout for a motivated, enthusiastic, and team-focused Equine Veterinary Nurse to help us achieve this.

Our approach is built around Care, Community, Communication, and Continuous Improvement. We’re proud to be an independent, privately owned practice that’s been serving North Canterbury for over 50 years. Today, we’re a team of 37 vets and 60+ support staff, working together to deliver outstanding veterinary care.

Our purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility includes a full equine surgical suite, a CT scanner, and a 6-bay hospital stable block designed to Best Practice Hospital Standards. We’re a busy ambulatory practice with an onsite Equine Hospital and Surgery, providing both first opinion and referral services to horse owners and veterinarians across North Canterbury and the wider South Island.

About You

Our values – Excellence, Empathy and Respect, Team and Community, and Innovation – guide everything we do. If you share these values, enjoy building strong client relationships, thrive in a collaborative environment, and are passionate about seeing horses and their owners succeed, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re seeking a qualified and experienced Equine Veterinary Nurse (Diploma, Degree, or equivalent in Veterinary Nursing, Veterinary Technology, or similar) with a particular interest in surgical and hospital care. You’ll have a strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and a desire to find your own “niche” within our services.

About the Role

In this role, you’ll be an essential part of our surgical and hospital team, ensuring the very best care for our equine patients. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with equine surgeries and maintaining theatre protocols.

  • Providing high-quality nursing care for surgical and hospitalised patients.

  • Supporting and mentoring team members in a collaborative environment.

  • Managing daily hospital operations smoothly and efficiently.

  • Participating in our after-hours and weekend roster.

  • Maintaining equipment, surgical instruments, barns, and theatre to high hygiene standards.

  • Overseeing stock control, invoicing, and accurate clinical record-keeping.

  • Communicating effectively with clients, referring vets, and the wider public.

  • Coordinating bookings, admissions, triage, and discharges.

You’ll join a dynamic team of nine equine veterinarians, two dedicated equine nurses, and three support staff – all passionate about providing exceptional equine care. This is a full-time role (Monday–Friday, 40 hours/week) with some rostered weekends and on-call work.

What We Offer

  • Competitive remuneration (minimum hourly rate is the Living Wage).

  • Opportunities for professional growth through in-house and external CPD.

  • Support to develop special interests within equine practice.

  • A friendly, supportive workplace where your ideas and input are valued.

Our clinic is BESTPRACTICE accredited and fully equipped with a surgical suite, 6-bay hospital stable block, hospital paddocks, arena, trot-up track, CT scanner, digital radiography, ultrasound, video and dynamic endoscopy, orthobiologics, shock wave, and an in-house lab.
